Here to Help You Break Free From Abuse
While I was checking in, I didn’t have a job, I didn’t know where I was supposed to start, and I was pretty much all over the place. The case workers were a big help to me, directing me to different programs and resources to find a job, workshops and women’s groups to attend. The Domestic Violence Support Center is a free counseling service to anyone, regardless of gender, who has experienced domestic violence. We ensure that victims in danger receive services and shelter immediately. Donations to House of Ruth Maryland help in providing food, shelter, counseling, legal and other services for the victims we serve. House of Ruth Maryland’s 24/7 hotline is a confidential lifeline to victims in need.

House of Ruth Maryland’s shelter is a safe place where battered women and their children live as a community dedicated to non-violence. Residents work together to keep space clean and healthy; they are assisted by housekeeping staff. The shelter is drug and alcohol free and battered women who have had substance abuse or mental health problems must be in treatment while living in shelter. Residents, staff and volunteers are equally committed to keeping the shelter location confidential to protect everyone there. School-age children attend school; some others are enrolled in childcare.

The Domestic Violence Support Center
Your gift helps to ensure critical resources like safe housing, mental health care and childcare are available to survivors of houselessness and domestic violence here in DC. Therapists work in partnership with the health clinic and our wellness program to make sure that woman and children receive the support, counseling, and nurturing that they need. Los Angeles House of Ruth provides services for Homeless Women with Children. Beyond serving families in our housing program, an additional 500 people a year (minimum) are provided with referrals for food, medical help, shelter, and other crisis services. The mission of the Los Angeles House of Ruth is to provide temporary and transitional shelter and supportive services for homeless battered women and their children. House of Ruth’s Domestic Violence Support Center (DVSC) provides crucial counseling services to those who have experienced or are currently experiencing domestic violence or intimate partner violence.

Many of our program participants have gone on to purchase homes, pursue graduate degrees and thrive in their careers. All this wouldn’t have been possible without their self-determination and the support we’re able to offer. House of Ruth, founded in 1976 and opened on November 21, 1977,[1] is a non-profit organization that serves more than 600 women and children who are abused and homeless in Washington, DC.

Staff is on-site around the clock to assist the women and ensure their safety while creating a warm, nurturing environment. LAHR provides onsite individual and group counseling for children and their parents as additional support. Our mental health staff includes therapists who specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, which is successful in assisting the client in changing behaviors. Our child therapists specialize in children’s mental health issues, which the children in our shelters desperately need. When a family has mental health needs beyond our available staffing time, we refer the family to agencies that specialize in mental health treatment.

During this phase, we work intensively in partnership with each woman to assist her in securing income and housing. Also, we support women in utilizing the shelter’s rich offering of tools and services to work through trauma, begin to plan for self-sufficiency, and expand her capacity to grow through involvement in enrichment and wellness programs. Our services include enriched housing for families and single women, trauma-informed child development, and free counseling to anyone, regardless of gender, who is a survivor of trauma and abuse. For over 40 years, House of Ruth has provided safe and stable housing to women, children and families in the DC area who have experienced houselessness and abuse. The building that housed Three Sisters is re-purposed to provide long-term, supportive housing to single women. Since 1970, SOME has been a care provider and a beacon of hope to DC residents, including individuals, families, senior citizens, veterans and those affected by physical or mental health challenges. We meet their immediate and long-term needs through our comprehensive approach to health and wellness, known as Whole Person Care. Since intimate partner violence is framed within the global issue of violence against women, it is shaped and supported by societal, familial, and cultural norms and is complicated by the intersection of other cultural oppressions. Today, House of Ruth Maryland is recognized as one of the nation’s most comprehensive domestic violence centers and has a staff of more than ninety. Our voluntary leadership consists of a thirty-member Board of Directors and an Advisory Committee. Case Managers will provide a wide array of referral services for women with children that qualify.
